The Brand New Triton – A Traditional ‘True’ pin

New for Summer 2021, the Triton True-Pin extends the Youngs range of centrepin reels. Named after the ancient Greek God Triton, who was said to have the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish.

The Triton True-Pin embodies the relationship between the angler and the fish, by offering the angler an unparalleled immersive experience which takes angling to the next level. True pin reels are considered by both the purist anglers and, probably more importantly, engineers as the reel deal (pun intended), providing anglers with a more direct fishing experience, making them feel not only more connected with their reel, but also at one with their surroundings. Bob James, one of the country’s foremost exponents of ’pin fishing and presenter of BBC Television’s ‘A Passion for Angling’ comments: “I always compare using a JW Youngs true pin reel, with driving a full out classic sports car: they take river fishing to the next level.”

The Triton design is loosely based on the extremely popular, and now highly collectible Atom reel, of which only 150 were made as a limited edition. The Triton is a classic True-Pin design which spins directly on the centre spindle without any bearings. This offers anglers a truly traditional fishing experience like no other. True-pins are widely considered by anglers across the globe as the creme de la creme of reels.

This ultra stylish reel is anodised in a black lustre with brass style fittings to finish. The reel is fitted with 12 spokes and a micro-adjustable drag. The brass rod plate features the Beta-Light slot for night fishing.

The Triton is, in common with all J.W. Young’s reels, stunning to look at with a glossy black and brass finish. It has all the usual extras, presented in a British handmade padded pouch, individual serial number, warranty and certificate of manufacture.

Every one of our reels is unique, so make sure you are involved in your reel’s story.

J.W. Young & Sons: The Future

From their humble beginnings in 1884 up to the present day, J.W. Young’s have been supplying traditional, handcrafted centrepin fishing reels throughout the world. The production of these fabulous reels moved to Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire during 2001, and moved into a brand new Tewkesbury based factory after being bought by Chris Miles and Vicki Haines in 2020.

Centrepin reels, for which they are justly famous, come in two main variants: the original, traditional and generally most sought after models are ‘true’ pins where the spool rotates directly on the central pin, and the more modern centrepins where the spool rotates on bearings.

J.W. Young’s are set to introduce a brand new ‘true’ pin, the Triton, in 2021, with a waiting list of interested anglers that is already growing fast. This major addition extends the line-up that already comprises of the Ray Walton, Bob James Centrepin, Purist, Lightweight, James Young Heritage, and River Specialist.

“Because our reels are hand built to the most exacting standards, we are now receiving more and more enquiries from North America, mainland Europe and parts of Asia,” comments Vicki. “People love the heritage of J.W. Young centrepin reels, as well as the feeling they get when using them. We are often told it’s all about why people go fishing, being connected with fishing’s rich history and culture and the feeling you get when using them, rather than stacking up a list of big fish being caught, and we’re delighted people feel that way.”

Master reel maker Chris Miles commented: “J.W. Young centrepin reels remain collectible with many of our customers purchasing two of each new model, one for regular use, and the other for the display cabinet. We always make sure that they can get them sequentially numbered, making them even more valuable to both anglers and the collectors.

“We provide a standard two-year warranty on new reels, with the option of extending to five years when bought directly through our website. Many anglers still love to use the vintage models and because of the build quality they still work perfectly.” said Chris.

The J.W. Young brand is unmistakably and quintessentially British and highly desirable throughout the world. With continually increasing demand Vicki and Chris are set to launch additional models and small numbers of limited editions. Next year there is the planned launch of a long sought after fly fishing reel, complementing their already world-class offering.

As well as the reels, J.W. Young plan on forging closer partnerships with other high quality and bespoke British fishing brands, giving customers the chance to complement their fishing tackle like never before.

The year 2020 is unlikely to be forgotten, for most of us we’ll remember the ravages of the global pandemic. But for Chris Miles and his partner, Vicki Haines, this was the year they decided to take the plunge and buy the J.W. Young and Sons brand.

Chris and Vicki had a goal: to maintain and grow the great British heritage of J.W. Young reels and supply the finest, handcrafted centrepin fishing reels in the world. Chris and Vicki are the custodians of this ethos: 130+ years of hand built excellence that has earned the brand its place in the history of British fishing. Buying and owning a Youngs reel, is buying into this rich angling heritage, that certain something that is sadly missing in mass produced reels.

Chris has been involved in the fishing industry for nearly 30 years, starting when he was 17, he worked under the supervision of two of the finest reel makers, Jim Young, grandson of the founder, James William Young, and Gary Mills. Chris, a master reel maker knows the importance of every part of the rigorous design, manufacture, assembly and testing process. He builds, inspects and signs off every reel that comes out of the factory, every reel is unique with its very own story.

J.W. Youngs reels, are built to last, providing many years of untroubled angling service, indeed many of the earlier models are not only sought after as collectibles, but also as some of the finest reels still in service to this day. Individually serial numbered with their own certificate of authenticity, each reel is now presented in its very own British handmade padded pouch, ensuring the hand-polished finish retains its beautiful lustre.

Although Jim Young is no longer actively involved in the business, his opinion is still highly valued, Chris and Vicki often tapping into his lifetime experience of reel making. “We like to maintain the same level of workmanship on the reels we make today as that of Jim Young himself,” says Chris. “The value of his 60 plus years of reel making experience just can’t be bought, it’s probably unique. Jim is still an important cog in the machinery of the brand and Jim always receives one of the first reels in each model range to add to his personal collection.”

Although the reels are predominantly sold in the UK, anglers around the world are beginning to appreciate the delights of centrepin fishing with growing demand throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.

Initially focussed on making centrepin reels, widely regarded for the precise and immediate control that users prefer, there are plans to build some new limited edition fly reels that will appeal to the most discerning of fly anglers.

Chris comments: “True ’pin reels offer a great fishing experience right out of the box, there’s no better feeling than trotting a float down a streamy river for roach, dace, chub or grayling. In fact, the experience and performance of the reel just gets better and better through regular use. It’s one of the many reasons why vintage reels are so sought after today.” Says Chris.

J.W. Youngs reels have been made in the idyllic English counties of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire since 1884, considered by those who know, to be the benchmark of reel making excellence. The tradition and heritage of hand-built British engineering is as real today as it’s ever been, with a stable of modern classics being created at the new Gloucestershire based works in Tewkesbury. Owning a reel from the J.W. Young’s range means that you can be part of that 130+ year angling heritage.

James William Young gave his name to the J.W. Young’s brand at the tender age of 24. Born in Redditch in 1870, the son of a fishing reel maker, he was destined to make reels. From an early age, he displayed a natural talent for innovation with a flair for design and an eye for aesthetics, perhaps his greatest legacy is the Allcock Aerial. Instrumental in its early development, Aerial reels are seen as the epitome of centrepin design. Any Aerial, no matter its age or condition, remains a highly collectible prize.

Because of his precocious talent for design he quickly rose to become the head of reel production at Allcocks in Redditch. During this time he made the decision to set up his own business creating reels for Allcocks and other companies to market. Two of his sons, Howard and James, joined him after leaving school. Sadly, James William died following a tragic accident whilst on holiday on The Isle of Man in 1921. Howard and James continued running the now very successful business, located at the Mayfield Works, the site of an old apple orchard in Redditch. In 1940 they were joined by their brother, Edward E. Young just as their fishing reel production halted. The business was put at the disposal of the Ministry of Aircraft and they went on to produce one of the greatest war-time components - the firing button used in the legendary Spitfire fighter.

Production of reels resumed immediately after the end of the war, with unusually, the development the Ambidex, a fixed spool reel. Despite the success of this reel, their main production was in centrepin reels including the Gildex, Rapidex, Trudex, Windex, Seldex and Landex.

In 1965 Jim Young, qualified engineer and grandson of James William, was at the helm of the company when it was purchased by the famous American company, Noris Shakespeare, and they continued working together to manufacture fishing reels and spools.

In 2001 J.W. Young & Sons was acquired by Masterline International Ltd, a world-famous brand in all aspects of fishing. One of their employees, Chris Miles had joined Masterline at the age of 17, eventually becoming the Master Reel Maker for Young’s reels. With the demise of Masterline in 2020, Chris and his partner Vicki Haines made the bold decision to acquire the Young’s brand.

Chris’ expertise and in-depth knowledge of Young’s reels means that all of the assembly work continues to the famous high standards of excellence. Today, all reels are manufactured, engineered and hand-assembled in the UK with the final inspection always overseen by Chris Miles. Once he’s happy that the final product displays workmanship of the highest standards, Chris personally signs the certificate of authenticity that accompanies every reel.
