From their humble beginnings in 1884 up to the present day, J.W. Young’s have been supplying traditional, handcrafted centrepin fishing reels throughout the world. The production of these fabulous reels moved to Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire during 2001, and moved into a brand new Tewkesbury based factory after being bought by Chris Miles and Vicki Haines in 2020.

Centrepin reels, for which they are justly famous, come in two main variants: the original, traditional and generally most sought after models are ‘true’ pins where the spool rotates directly on the central pin, and the more modern centrepins where the spool rotates on bearings.

J.W. Young’s are set to introduce a brand new ‘true’ pin, the Triton, in 2021, with a waiting list of interested anglers that is already growing fast. This major addition extends the line-up that already comprises of the Ray Walton, Bob James Centrepin, Purist, Lightweight, James Young Heritage, and River Specialist.

Because our reels are hand built to the most exacting standards, we are now receiving more and more enquiries from North America, mainland Europe and parts of Asia,” comments Vicki. “People love the heritage of J.W. Young centrepin reels, as well as the feeling they get when using them. We are often told it’s all about why people go fishing, being connected with fishing’s rich history and culture and the feeling you get when using them, rather than stacking up a list of big fish being caught, and we’re delighted people feel that way.

J.W. Young centrepin reels remain collectible with many of our customers purchasing two of each new model, one for regular use, and the other for the display cabinet. We always make sure that they can get them sequentially numbered, making them even more valuable to both anglers and the collectors. We provide a standard two-year warranty on new reels, with the option of extending to five years when bought directly through our website. Many anglers still love to use the vintage models and because of the build quality they still work perfectly.

Chris Miles, master reel maker

The J.W. Young brand is unmistakably and quintessentially British and highly desirable throughout the world. With continually increasing demand Vicki and Chris are set to launch additional models and small numbers of limited editions. Next year there is the planned launch of a long sought after fly fishing reel, complementing their already world-class offering.

As well as the reels, J.W. Young plan on forging closer partnerships with other high quality and bespoke British fishing brands, giving customers the chance to complement their fishing tackle like never before.
